What Does WC Insurance Cover?

The Employees' Compensation Act 1923 mandates specific compensation amounts. A WC policy pays these amounts directly, protecting the employer from personal liability.

Real-World Scenarios

How WC Claims Work in Practice

Three actual claim scenarios showing how the Employees' Compensation Act formula translates into real payouts — and how a WC policy protects the employer.

Permanent Partial Disablement

Scaffolding Fall — Loss of One Hand

Ramesh, a 34-year-old mason at a high-rise construction site in Pune, falls from a second-floor scaffold and suffers a crush injury resulting in amputation of his dominant hand. Loss of one hand = 60% loss of earning capacity under Schedule I.

Monthly wages: 15,000 | Age factor (34): 194.40 | Disablement %: 60%
Formula: 60% × 15,000 × 194.40 × 60%

💰 10.5 Lakh — paid by WC insurer directly to Ramesh; employer's liability extinguished

Fatal Accident

Electrocution — Fatality on HT Line

Suresh, a 28-year-old electrician working on a high-tension cabling project near Bengaluru, is fatally electrocuted when an unmarked live wire is struck during trenching. His widow and two children are the legal dependants.

Monthly wages (capped): 15,000 | Age factor (28): 209.35
Formula: 50% × 15,000 × 209.35 + 15,000 funeral

💰 16.17 Lakh — paid to dependants; contractor fully protected against personal liability

Medical Expenses + Temporary Disablement

Back Injury — Hospitalisation + Recovery

Priya, a 26-year-old housekeeping worker deployed at a corporate campus in Mumbai, slips on a wet floor while carrying supplies, fracturing two vertebrae. Hospitalised 3 weeks, unable to work 90 days.

Hospitalisation: 88,000 | TTD: 25% × 12,000 × 3 months = 9,000 | Physiotherapy: 21,000

💰 12.07 Lakh — covered; employer has no out-of-pocket expense

Buyer's Guide

Common Mistakes Contractors Make When Buying WC

WC insurance is deceptively simple on the surface, but contractors routinely buy the wrong cover. Here are the six most common issues — and how to avoid them.

1

Buying Named-Only Cover for Variable Workforce

Many contractors insure a fixed list of workers, but site workforce changes daily — new labourers hired, subcontract labour brought in. If an unlisted worker is injured, the claim is rejected.

Request unnamed workmen cover with declaration basis

2

Mid-Year Worker Additions Not Endorsed

Headcount grows during the project but the policy is never updated. At claim time, the insurer finds the worker is not on the policy schedule and declines.

Add an endorsement every time headcount changes significantly; or use unnamed cover

3

Wrong Occupation Description

A policy issued for 'helper / unskilled labour' may not cover a skilled mason or electrician. The insurer may claim the occupation was mis-described.

List all occupations specifically — masons, carpenters, electricians, supervisors

4

Medical Expenses Not Included by Default

Basic WC policies focus on compensation (death/disablement) but do NOT automatically include medical expenses. Hospitalisation costs must be added as a specific extension.

Always add the medical expenses extension — adds 10–20% to premium but covers the most frequent claims

5

Site-Specific vs Blanket Cover Mismatch

Some policies are issued for a single project site. When workers are moved to a different site, they may not be covered if the new location is not endorsed.

Request an 'all sites' or 'any site in India' endorsement if operating across locations

6

Ignoring the Principal Employer Certificate Requirement

Large clients (government contracts, PSUs, MNCs) require a WC policy showing them as Principal Employer. A standard policy without this endorsement will not satisfy the contractual requirement.

Specify the principal employer's name and have it endorsed on the policy at inception

Client Stories

How SecureNow Clients Use WC Insurance

A 400 crore road project contractor with 800+ workers on multiple sites needed a single WC policy covering all sites and unnamed daily-wage labourers. Required principal employer endorsement for NHAI.

6.2L annual premium for 800 workers

The Solution

Policy issued with correct occupational description 'HT electricians, LT cable-laying crew, substation technicians.' Digit Insurance at 520 per 1L wage. Zero premium loading for high-voltage work.

520 per 1L wage bill · No loading

The Challenge

A national staffing company deploying 15,000+ contract workers across 200 client sites needed a single WC policy. Worker count fluctuated monthly; tracking named workers was impractical.

The Solution

Master unnamed workmen policy on declaration basis. Monthly headcount declarations. IFFCO-Tokio.

48L Annual · 320 per worker per year

❄️ HVAC Contractor, Delhi NCR

The Challenge

An HVAC company with 120 technicians working across commercial and residential projects needed WC cover that specifically included medical expenses — previous policy had excluded them.

The Solution

1L medical cover per worker · Zero out-of-pocket
